My First Piece of Music

by Pat Chiappa on August 30, 2011

On a recent vacation with relatives, I asked a few people what their very first record was – yes, the gang I was with would have bought records and not CD’s – either 45′s or LP’s.  Mine was “The Doors“, their debut LP released in 1967. My older brother, who had what I considered to be good taste in music, bought it for me as a gift for my b-day.  I would have been 12 years old.  In retrospect, it’s a good thing we didn’t have show and tell in our catholic school, I’m thinking the nuns would have been a bit uncomfortable with images of Jim Morrison with his low slung leather pants and bad boy sexy gaze.

Unfortunately, I lost track of all my records over the years. A while back I was visiting my younger brother (who also has a good, sense of music and was a lead singer in a band few years back) who had built a music studio with some friends. Decorating the walls all around the studio at eye level were album covers placed end to end. So many of them looked familiar – and then I saw The Doors, my first album.

I looked closer and saw the words I wrote on Jim Morrison’s lips, “kiss me”, scrawled lovingly in my 12 year old hand.  As I walked around the studio, I saw the rest of my albums which really brought back memories of the hours I spent as a rebellious teen, alone in my room, shutting out my family while listening to great music.  Sorry Mom and Dad – as you found out, it really was just a phase, I always loved you madly.

My younger brother was always stealing my stuff, but in this case, I was glad he did.

What and when was your first album?
